SOCIAL MEDIA: a boon or a bane?

What is Social Media?


SOCIETY +  MEDIA = Social media refers to the means of interactions and communications among people anywhere in world in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas , facts in any form. With increase in technology, new applications, websites are designed for the benefits of people, so that they can remain in contact with anyone from anywhere. But from the both sides, if anything had advantages then on the other side, it have disadvantages also, if they are not properly used. So, lets check out in case of social media.



Popular Social Media Tools and Platforms:



  • Blogs: A platform for any body which has to used for posting our viws regarding education, business, art, kithen, food, for any formal or informal agency. It is also called a mini website.

  • Facebook: The world’s largest social network, with more than 1.55 billion monthly active users .Users create a personal profile, by adding their personal information, add other users as friends, and exchange messages,information, ideas. Brands create pages and users are able to follow them and get notifications. It also has feature of video calling.

  • Twitter: A social networking platform that allows groups and individuals to stay connected with each other through the exchange of short status messages with 140 character limit. Mostly celebrities use this platform to share their viws with their fans.

  • YouTube & Vimeo: You tube is the most used application. This is the platform to share videos. People can make their video regadrding any topic like educational, movies, any information, and anyone can watch these videos by searching. The youtube channel is formed by people to post their videos & they can make their subscribers to earn money also.

  • InstagramA free photo and video sharing app that allows users to apply digital filters, frames and special effects to their photos and then share them on different of social networking sites, with friends.

  • Snapchat: A mobile app that lets users send photos and videos to friends or to their “story.” Snaps disappear after viewing or after 24 hours. It also attracts children with their funny animal lokking filters.



Disadvantages of Social Media for the Society



1:- Cyberbullying – Most of the children become victims of the cyberbulling. Because anyone can create a fake account and do anything without being traced, it has become quite easy for anyone to bully on the Internet. Mosly people are not aware from these bullyings and get trapped into it.



2:- Addiction – Like any drug, the social media has the power to attract people and to make them addict. Like youtube, what the people search, they can able to see videos of their choices, their interests, so that people dont want to stop watching it.



3:- Fraud and Scams – Several examples are available where individuals have scammed and commit fraud through the social media. Most of the cases are from marketing side like selling and perceiving.



4:- Security Issues – The personal accounts, status are not safe actually. These all informations are linked and anyone with hacking can able to use it.



5:- Cheating and Relationship Issues – Most of the people use the social media platform to find their partners and marry each other. The fake accounts and relationships are part of these cheatings. Some fake matrimonial sites are also included in it.



 Advantages of Social Media for the Society



1:- Connectivity – The first and main advantage of the social media is connectivity. People from anywhere can connect with anyone in the whole world without any problem or complexity. The beauty of social media is that you can connect with anyone to learn and share your thoughts, experiences, ideas, facts, information. The relatives in other countries, other far places can able to connect easily with the help of social media.



2:- Education – Social media has a lot of benefits for students and teachers. It is very easy to educate from others who are experts and professionals. In the field of education, the e-learning, videos, books reading apps and other resources are new inventions. We are able to follow anyone to learn from  and enhance your knowledge about any field regarding any topic. 



3:- Information and Updates – The other advantage of the social media is that you can update yourself from the latest happenings around in the world current affairs regarding politics, crime, new discoveries, bollywood etc. Most of the time, Television and print media these days are biased and does not convey the true message, but social media is the best option now.



4:- Promotion – Whether you have an offline business or online in any field, the whole world is open for you, and you can promote to you. This makes the businesses profitable , more famous and publicity and less expensive because advertising through mass media is expensive and not connect everyone.



5:- Noble Cause – Social media can also be used for the noble causes. For example, to promote an NGO, social welfare activities, clubs, other organisations and donations for the poor, unhealthy people. With the social media, we can help anyone, from anywhere by paying online money transfer and it is the quick process without any corruption and biasing.



                         CONCLUSION:


Concluding the whole topic discussed above, after seeing the benefits and limitations of  social media, we can say that it have more advantages than disadvantages if we use it in limit and proper way. So its upon only us, that we can make it a boon for us or a bane.
