Nurturing the Spirit of Innovation through M-Learning

The sole aim of the technology is advancing and enhancing the classroom teaching-learning situations especially to enhance group collaboration among students and instructors. A teachers must train the students in multitasked, multifaceted, technology-driven, diverse, vibrant world in an inclusive manner. The experience of independent learning may encourage the students to continue the learning process on their own in other fields and in the future. Teachers can encourage the students to be resource providers and can train them to be self-learners and self-trainers in an education with technology. Mobile learning is acquisition of any knowledge using portable technologies like mobile phones, iPads and PDAs since they have more processing power and more interesting applications than were commonly available on desktop machines a decade ago.

M-Learning means “acquisition of any knowledge and skill through using mobile technology anytime, anywhere that results in alteration of behavior.” The term covers learning with portable technologies, where focus is on learning in mobile society with a focus on how its institutions can accommodate and support learning of an increasingly mobile population.

M-Learning-A Convenient way to Access Knowledge

Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, communities and homes. Besides, the devices required to access mobile network are relatively inexpensive compared to desktop and laptop computers. Following are some salient features of M-Learning:

  • Initiative of knowledge acquisition

  • Mobility of learning setting

  • Interactivity of the learning process

  • Integration of instructional content

  • Immediate and urgent need of learning

If all the classroom activities are carried out, keeping in view these features, this will definitely bring in excellent results in alteration of behavior of learners.

Mobile learning is convenient as it is accessible virtually from anywhere, which provides access to all different materials available. M-Learning also brings strong portability by replacing books and a note with mall RAM’s filled with tailored learning contents.

  • Record: learner may use a portable device to capture, preserve, note, memorize or create information.

  • Reinterpret: learner may use the portable device to discover or enhance existing data so that it is transformed into new information.

  • Relate: learner can share new information, recourses and can communicate directly with other learners, e.g. linking mobile devices through Bluetooth or sending files from one to another through SMS or MMS.

  • Reprint: learner can reprint this information and circulate it to the persons who need it.

M-Learning: Equalizing educational opportunities for all in many ways

With the help of M-Learning we find a very good scope for distance education in the country which has special relevance to the educational needs of modern India particularly in the following areas-

  • Increases efficiency and effectiveness of teaching and learning.

  • Mobile devices are cheaper than desktops or laptops.

  • Fast and easy accessing of information.

  • Mobiles are fairly lightweight, hence can be accessed wherever student learning is taking place.

  • Access to lessons, video clips and audio libraries from anywhere, anytime and also provide high definition voice calls.

  • Allows the students groups to distribute, aggregate and share information with ease resulting in more successful collaboration.

  • Motivates the students with multimedia facilities.

  • Enhances and complements traditional teaching styles.

  • Improves participation, learning, retention and student performance.

  • Paves way for personality development.

  • No geographical barriers

  • Access to remote learning resources

  • Eradication of Illiteracy

  • Equalizing educational opportunities for all

  • Meeting the ever-changing demand for higher education

  • providing continuing education to people engaged in different vocations through updating or refresher courses

Does M-Learning enhanced learning really work?

The educational effectiveness of M-Learning depends on how they are used and for what purpose. And like any other educational tool or mode of educational delivery, M-Learning do not work for everyone, everywhere in the same way. Here are some disadvantages of M-Learning, despite several advantages:

  • Loss of data may occur due to discharged batteries, low storage capacities of devices.

  • It is quite difficult to do jobs on graphics.

  • With limited wireless bandwidth there are chances that it may further decrease with the number of users ever on the increase.

  • In M-Learning venue, students are incapable of printing, simply because it requires a network connection. This is obviously not feasible in a number of real-life situations.

M-Learning is not just the bloom of the educational activities, but also it will be the secondary option to improve the effective and meaningful process. Because the teacher is directly related to the classrooms so it becomes his duty to implement this Communication Technology in Education in such a way that it should provide the prospects and trends of integrating M-learning in to the general educational activities

  • The teachers should adapt to new technologies.

  • Teachers are no longer responsible for which information and knowledge is stored in the minds of learners but for how learners acquire information and knowledge. Teachers are not just passive helpers however .In a rapidly changing society, they should have clear visions themselves as to the creation and application of knowledge which is to be presented to learners.

  • They should be content experts of their subject-matter

  • Teachers should play the role of learning consultants who diagnose various problems that learners face

  • They should prescribe methods to facilitate learning activities.

  • They should use ICT as motivating tool  for the students as young people are very captivated with the technology

  • Teachers can use internet while teaching as it facilitates cooperative learning, encourages dialogue, and creates a more engaging classroom

For this role, teachers need knowledge and skills to appropriate, discover, develop, and apply various learning methodologies. In particular, to utilize various digital learning resources, teachers need to have digital literacy, the ability to search, evaluate, edit, process, and utilize digitized information. Digital literacy also includes the ability to share learning outcomes with others and to build and maintain various cyber communities

The development of mobile wireless technologies has generated a considerable amount of excitement among practitioners and academics because it results in shifting the academic environment from traditional setting to mobile learning settings. Mobile wireless technologies are the new frontier for teaching and learning in institution of higher education. Many educational opportunities are made possible because of M-technologies’ unique characteristics and positive impacts identified in higher education. With M-Learning, a wealth of learning materials in almost every subject and in a variety of media can now be accessed from anywhere and anytime by the unlimited number of people. We can, in short, use M-technologies’ to qualitatively improve cognition by conceptualizing more creatively, improving teachers’ knowledge and by tailoring learning resources to meet the particular needs of a child at every stage of his or her education. Brushing up the cake we can say M-technologies’ has a meaningful present and a promising future nowadays.
